Coldstream Hills is excited and proud to have been awarded the Geoffrey Crundall Perpetual Trophy for best Pinot Noir (Class 29) at the 2012 Sydney Royal Wine Show for the 2010 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. This follows the gold medal-winning success at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2011.

The 2010 Pinot Noir was sourced from low yielding vineyards located in the Lower and Upper Yarra Valley. Selectively handpicked, the wine was made using a variety of handling and fermentation techniques, some including the use of whole bunches. Each batch was then matured in new and seasoned oak for nine months, prior to blending and bottling.

Since its first vintage in 1985, Coldstream Hills has grown to be one of Australia’s leading small wineries. The 2010 Pinot Noir continues to build on this enviable reputation for producing an outstanding range of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Varietal, Single Vineyard and Reserve wines.

Founded in 1973, by Robert and Edward Merzoian and Kenneth Sheffield, Chateau St. Jean is located in Sonoma County, California.

What is the history of Chateau St. Jean and how did it get its name?

Founded in 1973, by Robert and Edward Merzoian and Kenneth Sheffield, the winery was named after Jean Sheffield Merzoian, the sister to Kenneth and wife to Edward.

What defines Chateau St. Jean’s current winemaking style?

In its 39 year history, Chateau St. Jean has been under the exceptional care of four winemakers: Dick Arrowood, Don Van Staaveren, Steve Reeder and now Margo Van Staaveren. Margo, who celebrates 32 years of winemaking at Chateau St. Jean this year, was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast in 2008.

One of the things Margo enjoys most about her job is putting together the final blend for the Reserve wines. “Since no two vintages are alike, it gives us the opportunity to carefully search for the vineyard lots that offer the biggest fruit expression and the ability to age in order to create a wine that truly captures the best of the vintage,” says Margo. The Reserve wines represent the most concentrated, distinctive and balanced wines made at Chateau St. Jean.

How many different wines does Chateau St. Jean produce and which ones is the brand known for?

The brand produces a broad array of spectacular wines, including Fumé Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, that range from regional, single vineyard, and reserve, and from super-premium to icon.

In 1999, Chateau St. Jean was the first Sonoma winery to be awarded the prestigious “Wine of the Year” award from the Wine Spectator Magazine for its 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux-style blend of five varieties.

Chateau St. Jean also has a long and wonderful history with Chardonnay. Being the first winery in California to produce single vineyard designates of this varietal, Chateau St. Jean was at the forefront of exploring Sonoma County’s unique terrior.

Where is the winery located and what is the property like?

Located one hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Kenwood, California (within Sonoma County) the historic Chateau sits on 200 acres, 100 of which are planted estate vineyards. In the summer of 2000, Chateau St. Jean opened the doors to its new Visitor Centre and gardens.

In keeping with the Chateau architecture and sense of place, the wine tasting and cellar door is housed in an elegant structure surrounded by terraces and outdoor garden spaces often used for weddings, picnics and corporate events.

Tastings, tours, and the Charcuterie delicatessen are available daily.
