The Estate was founded in 1891 by John Riddoch who planted vineyards and in 1896 completed Wynns famous triple gabled winery, now featured on Wynns iconic labels. David Wynn purchased the winery and vineyards in 1951 renaming it Wynns Coonawarra Estate.

In 1954 Wynns Coonawarra Estate created its first Cabernet with Wynns Black Label Cabernet. Wynns Cabernet is still regarded as equal to the world’s best. James Halliday describes Wynns Black Label Cabernet as “the most important Cabernet in Australia with a magnificent history”. Wynns Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet is one of Australia's most collected and cellared Cabernets.

Coonawarra’s international reputation is derived from the regionally specific terra rossa soil and indeed Wynns Coonawarra Estate has some of the oldest vines in the region and is largely regarded as the estate that made Coonawarra famous.
